José Manuel Pérez-Pérez Principal investigator

Since 2019, I am Full Professor of Genetics at the UMH. After my Biology studies at the Universidad de Alicante (España), I did my Ph.D. in the group of Prof. J.L. Micol, at the neighbouring Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH), on the genetic analysis of leaf development in Arabidopsis thaliana.

I carried out my postdoctoral research with Prof. B. Scheres at Utrecht University (The Netherlands), on the link between cell cycle regulators and root growth and development. Afterwards, I came back to the group of Prof. J.L. Micol to work on leaf growth coordination from a Systems Biology perspective.

In 2012, I started my independent research group at the Genetics Unit of the Instituto de Bioingeniería (IB-UMH) whose main objective is to understand regenerative processes in plants.

Eduardo Larriba Postdoc

Eduardo holds a Doctorate degree in Biology from the University of Alicante. His Ph.D. Thesis focused on genetic, genomic and transcriptomic analysis of Pochonia chlamydosporia. He carried out an in-depth genomic analysis, leading the sequencing and functional annotation of the first genome of a nematophagous fungus. Thereafter, he made his first postdoc in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Gametogenesis at the Center for Biological Research (CIB-CSIC, Madrid). His research focused on the analysis of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA), mainly small RNAs (sncRNA), in primordial germ cells (PGCs) and mammalian gametes. Currently, his research focuses in transcriptomic and genomic analysis of protein and non-protein coding genes during de novo shoot and root formation in tomato.

María Salud Justamante Postdoc

María Salud studied Biology at the Universidad de Alicante and followed the Master in Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the UMH. She has been involved on the optimization of in vitro micropropagation in different plant species. During her Ph.D., she characterized adventitious root formation on a collection of commercial carnation cultivars. Her current work focuses on phenotypic and hormonal characterization of root system architecture in tomato and wild relatives.

Riyazuddin Riyazuddin Postdoc

Riyazuddin studied Plant Biology and completed his Master of Science at the University of Delhi (India). He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Szeged (Hungary). During his PhD he worked on investigating the participation of Arabidopsis thaliana peroxidases GPXL4 and 5 in ethylene and polyamine signaling. Since joining the laboratory in May 2023, he is interested in determining the function of LSD1-like protein complexes in the regulation of gene expression and chromatin structure.

Anabel García Heredia Postdoc

Anabel studied Biology at the University of Murcia (UM) and obtained her Ph.D. at Rovira i Virgili University in 2016. She has carried out three postdoctoral fellowships: one at the Basic Research Unit in Diabetes of the IDiBE (UMH), another at the Research Group In Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Colorectal Cancer (Sara Borrell, 2020) and another more at the Research Group in Genetics, Epigenetics and Transcription in Neuropathologies (AVI, 2023), both at the General University Hospital of Alicante-ISABIAL. In our laboratory, she helps us to implement a new platform for transcriptome analysis in plants.

Carlos Torralbo Torrado Ph.D. student

Carlos studied Biotechnology at the UMH and obtained a Masters in Biotechnology of Assisted Human Reproduction at the University of Valencia (UV). His doctoral thesis focused on the phenotypic and molecular study of the function of LSD1-like complexes in plant and root development.

Lara Caballero López Research Technician

Lara studied Biotechnology at the UMH and completed the Master’s Degree in Basic and Applied Neurosciences at the University of Valencia (UV). She has joined our laboratory as a technician in the “Investigo” program of the Generalitat Valenciana, and collaborates in the research projects related to de novo organ formation in the lab, while she is helping us to valorize our results.

Adrián Luque Torres Research Technician

Adrián studied Biology at the University of Murcia and completed the Master’s Degree in Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the UMH. After carrying out his TFM with Arabidopsis thaliana, he joined the laboratory to work on the genotypic and phenotypic characterization of T-DNA insertional mutants affected in organ regeneration in response to wounding.

Carla Navarro Quiles Research Technician

Carla studied Biotechnology and obtained her Ph.D. at the UMH. During her Ph.D., she worked on the morphogenetic functions of ABCE proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana. Since October 2024, she has been providing technical support to the laboratory’s projects through the Servicio de Apoyo Técnico a la Docencia y a la Investigación (SATDI).
